THE HERBAL REVOLUTION By Lutishia Lovely
The world of herbs is fascinating: wonderfully complex, powerfully beneficial and ever-changing. The very concept of the word “herb” and what that term means has changed continually in the thousands of years it’s been documented – and continues to evolve. The World Wide Web’s general definition of an herb is: ”includes crude plant material such as leaves, flowers, fruit, seed, stems, wood, bark, roots, rhizomes or other plant parts, which may be entire, fragmented or powdered.” It is within this context we will take a journey into the wonderful evolution of herbs.
Although herbs can be used in a variety of ways, the oldest recorded usages were of a medicinal nature. Accounts vary as to where the oldest use of herbs in medicine began, but it is generally agreed that China, India and Africa were among the first countries and cultures to incorporate herbs in their medical systems. These recordings, historically called “herbals”, are the writings from which most of our modern herbal literature originates...
Inner Healing For The Inner City by Lutishia Lovely
As she watched the evening news, Krishna Kaur knew she had to do something. The state of California had just passed the three strikes law, a law that sentences repeat offenders to a minimum 25-year prison term if they are convicted of a third offense. She thought of all the young men, under the age of 25, who may spend the rest of their lives in prison—sent there by a judicial system she thought flawed, discriminatory and inconsistent in their sentencing. Having practiced yoga since the 1970s, the ancient art form that focuses on bringing peace, balance and harmony to the participant, she immediately knew the solution. She had to increase her promotion of yoga among people of color, particularly young, Black, at-risk teens. She understood that the prison population would continue to grow as long as these individuals remained incarcerated from within...
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Spiritual Vacations and Retreat Destinations By Lutishia Lovely
Across the country and all over the world, people will be loading up their SUVs, hitching up the RVs, packing the suitcases and catching planes, trains or other modes of transportation on their way to a vacation destination. We’ve waited all year long for this chance to get away from it all, to relax and reflect, turn off the alarm clock and totally embrace the lazy, hazy days of summer. Right? Well, maybe. But more often than not, we often need a vacation from our vacation when we return home. That’s because we try to do in a couple weeks what should take months to accomplish. We try to see every tourist attraction in the city, eat at every restaurant within smelling distance, drink every libation with (or without) an umbrella, catch every special event – and we haven’t even started with our children’s choices – amusement parks and swimming holes, beaches and basketball courts, and the must have…shopping malls for all. By the time we get home from our “time off,” we’re exhausted! I’m exhausted just writing about it!
